The holes just make the thermostat essentially act as a lower temp. thermostat. More coolant will flow when the thermostat is closed, which will keep engine temps lower in theory. I did this on my Turbo NX2000. The trick is size the holes perfectly so you get the extra cooling you're looking for, but not too big as to cause over-cooling (ie the car never "warms" up)
